2011 Election: Nigerians in the Diaspora Debate the Issues

  • PDF

Nigeria with its population approaching two hundred million is the most populous country in Africa. Blessed with oil it is the worlds sixth largest producer of the black stuff which some Nigerians view as a curse. Few Nigerians, including those in oil-producing areas, have benefited from the oil wealth; the responsibility for which has been laid at the door of poor governance and corruption. Its population tired and weary openly vents its frustration by challenging the unity of the nation through the fault lines of ethnic and religious affiliations. Latterly the expression of decent has given rise to new and disturbing features which may herald the end of democratic politics in Nigeria if not Nigeria itself. The explosion of a bomb on March 2 at the  People’s Democratic Party rally, killed thirteen and seriously injured twenty people. This event has cast a dark and ominous shadow over the 2011 election. Whether democracy thrives or perishes the outcome of the 2011 Election will prove to be an important land mark in the history of Nigeria. The campaigners are out and the battle for the democratic soul of Nigeria joined. In bringing this event to you the organizers seek to support the continuation of democratic politics in Nigeria.
